Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure performed to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose while also correcting breathing functions. Medically referred to as rhinoplasty, the procedure involves reshaping the bone and cartilage structure of the nose. The goal is to achieve a natural-looking, functional nose that harmonizes with the patient’s facial features.
Since the nose is located at the very center of the face, it plays a key role in overall facial balance and expression. Structural issues such as a drooping nasal tip, hump, asymmetry, or crookedness can affect both appearance and self-confidence. Rhinoplasty not only addresses cosmetic concerns but can also correct breathing problems caused by conditions like septal deviation or enlarged nasal turbinates.
Op. Dr. Özlem Oymak provides personalized treatment plans to ensure both aesthetic harmony and functional success, delivering natural, balanced results tailored to each patient.
The nose is one of the most important facial structures, playing a crucial role in both appearance and vital functions such as breathing. It is a complex system made up of bone, cartilage, skin, and soft tissue. Both the external and internal structures contribute to its overall function and aesthetics.
Main anatomical components of the nose:
Upper part (bone structure): Forms the upper section of the nose and connects to the forehead.
Middle part (upper lateral cartilage): Provides the transition between the bone and the nasal tip.
Nasal tip: The lowest and front-most part of the nose, shaped by the tip cartilages.
Nostrils (nasal valves): The entry point for airflow; narrowing can lead to breathing difficulties.
Septum: The inner wall that divides the nasal cavity into two sides; deviations can cause breathing problems.
Turbinates (conchae): Structures that humidify, warm, and filter the air entering the nose.
A well-designed nose should be in harmony with the face while maintaining proper breathing function. For this reason, rhinoplasty must take into account both the external appearance and the internal structures of the nose to achieve optimal results.
Rhinoplasty may be suitable for individuals who:
Are unhappy with a nasal hump.
Have a drooping or misshapen nasal tip.
Are dissatisfied with the length or width of their nose.
Notice asymmetry in their nostrils.
Feel their nose is disproportionate to their facial features.
Experience breathing difficulties in addition to aesthetic concerns.
Every face is unique, and therefore, every nose design must be customized. The aim of rhinoplasty is to create a balanced, symmetrical, and natural-looking nose that complements the facial structure. Instead of an overly upturned or artificial appearance, the focus is on subtle and harmonious improvement.
Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 2–3 hours. The surgery can be carried out using either the open or closed technique:
Open rhinoplasty: A small incision is made at the base of the nose, allowing direct visibility of the nasal structures.
Closed rhinoplasty: All incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible external scar.
The choice of technique depends on the patient’s nasal structure and desired outcome, as determined by the surgeon.
After surgery, a nasal splint is usually applied for the first week. In some cases, soft silicone splints may also be used, which are typically removed comfortably and without pain.
Typical recovery timeline:
First 3–5 days: Mild swelling and bruising may occur.
Day 7: The splint is removed.
Within 2–3 weeks: Most patients can return to their social life.
1–2 months: The new shape of the nose becomes more defined.
6–12 months: Final results are fully visible as the tissues settle completely.

The surgery usually takes 2–3 hours. Including preparation and recovery time, you may spend a total of 5–6 hours at the hospital.
Swelling and bruising are normal in the first few days after surgery.
Cold compresses are recommended for the first 3–5 days.
Stitches are removed within 5–7 days.
You can return to your daily routine after 7–10 days.
The eye area will take on a completely natural appearance within 1–2 months.
